Every Young Person’s Star Shines! Fall 2010…
Welcome! YPT is the place to be whether you are an aspiring performer or just want to build confidence and make new friends. YPT classes, workshops and activities encourage young people to actively explore the beauty, diversity, complexity and challenges of the world around them through the dramatic process. Our goal is that they develop their own unique creative voice, their imagination and their understanding of drama and its role in society. We look forward to soaring with your young star as they experience new adventures and challenges through our performing arts offerings and take their next step as an actor and a person! Staffing: YPT is excited to be offering the following classes this Fall with some incredibly talented and wonderful instructors whose bios will all be on the website very soon. Registration Procedures: Fill out and mail Fall Class Registration Form to YPT's Business Office, 401 West Morgan Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Download Registration Form from website. All sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please remember to register soon as many fill quickly. We will focus on lively classroom activities involving imaginative movement and theatrical play around the fundamentals of dance for musical theater. The class will involve warm ups as well as the games that they all love to play! A small class size ensures a great experience for your young star! Schedule: Wednesdays, 1:00-1:45pm, October 6 – November 10, 2010 Tuition: $125 Class Size: 10-12 students Grades: Pre-K and K Instructor: Trisha Schwartz Start early learning the dance fundamentals to become a triple threat for musical theater… Get going on the dancing part of singing, acting and dancing. This class will introduce our younger aspiring stars to proper body alignment and technique development for ballet, tap, and contemporary dance. This class will provide a chance to explore the magic of dance and movement as integrated into the world of musical theater! It will also get your young star moving and shaking, rattling and rolling - working off some of that amazing energy we would all love! Schedule: Saturdays, 1:00-1:45pm, October 2 – November 6 Tuition: $125 Class Size: 10-12 students Grades: 1st – 3rd Grade Instructor: Trisha Schwartz This class will tap your young stars’ creativity and keep them begging to come to class every week. The emphasis will be on exploring a new facet of musical theater foundations each week while having fun doing it! Our adventurers will travel through sessions exploring stage directions, make up and hair, costuming, props, acting, singing and dancing, improvisation, story telling and team building. They will focus on imagination and creation involving favorite characters and stories in these sessions. The class will also involve warm ups and all the theater games that they love to play! Each week will culminate in a sharing session for parents to learn about theater, too! Schedule: Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30pm, October 6 – December 1, 2010 (No Class November 17) Tuition: $150 Class Size: 12-15 Grades: 3rd – 5th Grade Getting ready to audition for The Sound of Music? Is this your first audition? Are you just getting your start in exploring musical theater? Perhaps you have auditioned before but want to learn how to be more comfortable and successful in an audition. A successful audition involves much more than just talent. An audition begins the moment you walk in the door! Have no fear, Audition Techniques is here! Parents are welcome to sit in to learn how to support their aspiring stars in an audition process. Learn what an audition process entails and how to prepare including choosing a song and presenting it to the pianist. And finally and perhaps most importantly, students will learn how to recover from mistakes and even use them to their advantage! Middle School Life is a Cabaret! Performance Opportunity! An incredible opportunity for our rising stars! This class is designed to teach theatrically motivated students Broadway-style songs complete with dance choreography. Learn, and perform a not-to-be-missed musical revue showcase in the YPT Blackbox Theatre at the end of the class for parents and friends. Class tuition includes two tickets to the performance! Additional tickets on sale for $5. Schedule: Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00pm, October 5 – December 7, 2010 (No Class November 16) Tuition: $175 Class Size: 12-15 students Grades: 5th – 8th Grade Performances: Friday, December 10 7:00pm and Saturday, December 11 2:00pm Instructor: Jayme Kelmigian Do you want to strengthen your theater repertoire by adding dance skills to your bag of tricks? This dance class is designed to teach theatrically motivated students basic rhythm and movement skills so you are more competitive in auditions and dancing on stage with the rest of the cast. You will also learn warm up techniques to help ensure safety and increase flexibility. This class is being offered in response to many of you who have requested a way to get started in dance even though you are in middle school and high school. Bring your dancin' attitude, and Let's Dance! Session I: Saturdays, 2:00-2:45pm, October 2 – November 6 Tuition: $125 Class Size: 12-15 students Grades: 4th – 7th Grade Instructor: Trisha Schwartz Audition Techniques Getting ready to audition for The Sound of Music? Did you know that there is such a thing as audition etiquette? A successful audition involves much more than just talent. An audition begins the moment you walk in the door! Have no fear, Audition Techniques is here! Students will explore how to chose a song and learn how to present themselves to the pianist. Students should bring a photocopied 16 bar excerpt of a musical theater selection and they will learn how to present their materials and mark their music clearly for a pianist. And finally and perhaps most importantly, students will learn how to recover from mistakes and even use them to their advantage! Session II: Wednesday, September 8, 2010, 5:15-6:15pm Tuition: $25 Class Size: 10-12 prospective auditioners Grades: 4th – 7th Grade Instructor: Marlene Inman-Reilly Take your acting abilities to a new level… Acting concepts and abilities are developed through scene work. Explore acting concepts such as: given circumstances and verbs, realism, comedic and period styles, subtext, action & reaction, listening, connecting, and honesty. We'll use scenes from classic and contemporary American plays as well as use scenes from participants' favorite shows. Schedule: Saturday, October 16, 2010 10:00am – 2:00pm Tuition: $50 Class Size: 12 Grades: 7th – 12th grade Instructor: Lynn Lammers Everyone loves to see a good fight on stage! Imagine how much fun it is to be a part of the action! In this introductory class, students will learn the basics of hand-to-hand, unarmed combat in a safe, open environment. The main focus of this class is SAFETY. Students will be given the tools to perform basic fighting techniques designed specifically for the stage in a completely safe and effective manner. They will also learn how to choreograph and perform their own combat scenes. So if you want to learn how to punch, slap, choke, twist and pull your enemy without hurting a hair on their head, sign up today!! Session I: Saturday, November 6, 2010, 10:00am-12:00pm Tuition: $35 Class Size: 8-10 Grades: 5th – 8th Grade Instructor: Brian Ogden Oh no! I forgot my LINE! Don't worry, just IMPROVISE! In this class students will learn and practice the basic rules of improvisation. Through games and theatre exercises, students will become very comfortable "making it up as they go along." In the first part of the class students will learn how to use 'improv' as an acting tool, discovering how it applies to all areas of performance. In part two, they will "step-up" their techniques to learn the ins and outs of improvisation as a performance art form by itself, and how to do what 'improv-ers' do in venues such as Upright Citizen's Brigade, The Groundlings, or the world famous Second City. Schedule: Saturday, October 23, 2010, 1:00-3:00pm Tuition: $25 Class Size: 12-15 Grades: 7th – 12th Grade Instructor: Aral Basil Gribble II Every actor needs a good monologue! Whether you're auditioning for school plays or community theatre, or you're preparing for college auditions, monologues are an indispensable weapon in an actor's arsenal. In this class, actors will have the opportunity to workshop their monologues in front of a group, receiving indispensable feedback not just from their peers, but from a real, working, professional actor. Students will learn how to use a monologue to highlight their acting talent and skills so they can always make a "stand-out" impression wherever they go! Students will be required to prepare a 2 minute monologue of their choosing for this class.
